What is Shelby Fiber?
Shelby Fiber is a High Capacity Wireless Fed Fiber Optic Internet Service, a service provided by Shelby Broadband. Shelby Broadband provides Internet Service to customers in Rural Kentucky via Microwave Wireless Signals from 140+ towers and repeaters. The Shelby Broadband Network covers from Downtown Louisville to Downtown Lexington along I-64, and many counties including Shelby, Anderson, Franklin, Scott, Harrison, Bourbon, Fayette, Woodford, and more. We are leveraging the Shelby Broadband core infrastructure to provide Fiber Optic Internet Services. We do this by providing the middle mile over a wireless connection to a cabinet, tower, or repeater location. The last mile connection to your home is made via fiber.
How Fast is Shelby Fiber?
Shelby Fiber provides internet speeds up to 200 Megabits per second, and it's transferred to you at the speed of Light! The Local Cable Company provides speeds up to 50Mbps. We provide up to 4x faster speeds on the download and over 40x faster on the upload compared to Cable. Even DSL from the phone company can't keep up! Both of them provide service over a copper connection. We all know that the speed of light is faster on fiber!
What is Shelby Fiber Internet?
The Shelby Fiber Network consists of miles of fiber optic cables. Inside these cables there are many strands of fiber optic cables, about as thin as a human hair. We use one single strand of fiber to deliver data at speeds up to 1 Gbps (1000Mbps), roughly 100 times faster than the average home in the US today.
What Speed Should I Get?
A Typical 4K Video stream use up to 15Mbps per stream. Typical YouTube and FaceBook videos use up to 10Mbps per stream. Many XBox One and PS4 games are more than 10GB in size, and some as much as 50GB. The typical speed complaint is because of multiple users in the home. A typical Shelby Fiber connected home will use video streaming for TV with a service like Hulu, Sling, or ESPN. Each video stream will consume bandwidth. The minimum recommended speed is our Professional Fiber package for most internet uses today. If you plan to Cut the Cord and watch TV through your internet connection, the Super Fiber 100 or Super Fiber 200 plan is recommended. If you plan to do a lot of gaming, the Professional or Super Fiber 100 plan is recommended.
Do you provide a Wireless Router?
Shelby Fiber does not provide Wireless Routers. We don't provide support for in-home wireless connectivity. We highly recommend you upgrade your router and/or computer to get the best experience with our service. We strongly recommend the OnHub Router by TP-Link or ASUS, available at most retail stores. In some cases, a large home might need multiple routers, and it is suggested to make sure they are directly connected to the fiber service for best availability.
What is the construction fee for?
The $250 construction fee goes towards the materials, labor, and equipment needed to bring a fiber connection to your home. Even if you cancel service, your home remains fiber ready and service can be re-activated at any time at no additional cost. If the construction path is over 200', additional construction charges may apply.
How reliable is Shelby Fiber Internet Service
Since the fiber optic technology that we use is much more advanced than the copper wires maintained by the cable and telephone companies, Shelby Fiber service is not subject to the slowdowns that you might have experienced with cable Internet (e.g. in the evening when lots of people are trying to get online). The Shelby Fiber network is engineered from the ground up for reliable Internet service.
Can you Comapre it to Cable or DSL?
Shelby Fiber speeds are symmetric, they operate at the same speed when downloading or uploading. Cable and DSL are assymetric, they operate at a slower speed when uploading than when downloading, usually 1/10th the speed.

The upload portion of your bandwidth is very important, especially when working from home, backing up to the iCloud, Gaming, Video Conferencing, and emailing large files. We don't restrict that portion of your bandwidth like they do.
What will you provide as part of your installation?
Shelby Fiber will install a fiber cable from it's nearest splice point to your home. Most splice points are located in ground level hand holes, located by other utility infrastructure near or on your property. Then we will install a Network Interface Device (small box, approximately 9"x9"x2") on the side of your home. Then we will transition to indoor fiber and determine the best location for termination. From this point, we will install an Optical Network Terminal, and be able to provide you a Gigabit Connection to our network over Ethernet. You can use this to install into your network, router, or computer.
Is your home phone compatible with faxing, alarm systems, or other analog services?
In many cases, yes. Is it guaranteed? No. Will Shelby Fiber support it? No. Our Home Phone system is a digital system. When using analog services on a digital system, there can be some issues. Many Alarm Systems offer a Cellular Backup. We actually recommend this over a landline, because it is wireless and can't be cut. We do offer a Business Fax Service priced separately if needed.
What is the difference between Shelby Fiber and GigaLight?
The Shelby Fiber product is a last-mile Fiber to the Home service. The connection between the Shelby Broadband Core Network and the Shelby Fiber customer is fed by a Wireless signal. GigaLight is a 100% Fiber connected network. As the GigaLight network grows past existing Shelby Fiber builds, we will transition that network over to the GigaLight product and services family. The GigaLight network operates off of the same Shelby Broadband Core Network.
